Anyone who has sex can get an STI, also called STD (sexually transmitted disease). Many people don’t know they’ve been infected because they don’t have symptoms. STIs can cause serious health problems and increase your risk of HIV infection.
Red Door offers testing for all people ages 12 and older. We also treat many infections. Our specially trained staff will talk openly with you to determine your testing and treatment.
Most STIs are curable and all are treatable with medications.
STIs are caused by bacteria, parasites, or viruses spread during anal, vaginal, or oral sex with someone who has an untreated STI.
Some STIs like HIV and hepatitis B can also be transmitted through sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs or sharing body piercing and tattoo equipment.
Pregnant people may pass untreated infections to infants during pregnancy, birth, or breast feeding.
Many people don’t have symptoms even when they have an STI. But if you‘ve been sexually active, it’s a good idea to get tested if you notice any of the following symptoms:
Sometimes symptoms go away even when the STI is still present. Testing is the only sure way to know. When you book an appointment with us, be sure to let us know if you have symptoms so we can schedule the correct appointment for you.
Testing is the only way to know for sure if someone has an STI.
If you're sexually active, it's recommended to get tested at least once a year.
If you have multiple partners, testing every 3 to 6 months is recommended.
We understand that every person has unique needs. Your Red Door provider can help you decide how often to get tested.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is an HIV prevention medication. People who are HIV negative can take PrEP to reduce their risk of getting HIV.
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a medication for people who don’t have HIV but may have been exposed to it within the last 72 hours.
The sooner you see a provider for PEP the better, since it's most effective when taken closest to the time of exposure. We prescribe PEP during regular clinic hours.
Doxy PEP (doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) is a preventive treatment for bacterial STIs from anal and oral sex. Ask your provider about starting Doxy PEP.
We offer vaccinations that protect against:
Call us to schedule a vaccine or ask about vaccination during your clinic visit.
Condoms and dental dams are barriers that help prevent transmission of STIs.
Lube (lubricant) is used during sex to prevent friction, which increases pleasure and helps prevent STI transmission through small tears in anal and vaginal tissue. Lube also helps prevent condoms from breaking.
No-cost condoms and lube are available in our lobby during regular clinic hours, no appointment necessary.
When a patient has an STI, treatment is needed to stop the infection from causing longer-term health issues and to prevent spread to sexual partners. Red Door's specially trained staff will talk openly with you to determine the right treatment.
